Volume Eight - Issue Two

"Oh, Baby" - Brandy Meyer
Abortion, a word filled with moral and legal conflict. You’ve heard the arguments, the angles. Moralists cry of murder. The medically minded note that up until the seventh month, there is no “baby”, no vital organs with which to sustain life. What then, is the solution?

The fact of the matter is, when it comes to the abortion issue there is no clean cut answer. Opinions on this sensitive subject vary on every level. Personally, I find abortion ethically wrong, especially after the first trimester when a partial birth abortion becomes the only alternative. I am a proponent for personal responsibility and thus cannot find merit in abortion as birth control. Even for me, however, there is a gray area in my attitude, specifically in regards to women who have been raped or are in medical danger because of the pregnancy. In these situations, I find an abortion acceptable.

Thus, I give you my stand on abortion. Does my opinion matter? No.
No ones opinion actually has an impact at the time being because it is currently an issue in the hands of the Federal Government. I would like to see that change. The Constitution does not give the Federal Government explicit power to legislate abortion, and thus, according to the Tenth Amendment of the Constitution, it is reserved to the states. When one considers that the states are closer to the opinions of the people than is the Federal Government, this would inevitably result in a more contented populous when dealing with abortion laws. The more conservative states would be free to outlaw or make laws increasing the difficulty of obtaining an abortion. The liberal states could make abortions as accessible as they pleased. Overall, the issue would be in the hands of the people.

This election, I implore you to look at the candidates’ attitudes on abortion from a state perspective. Recognize the unconstitutionality of Roe v. Wade and lobby for state control of abortion. If you do, maybe tomorrow, your views will finally be heard.
