The Republican platform for the upcoming midterm elections was released just before Easter. In it is a call for an amendment to the Constitution against flag burning and new limits on abortion. It seems the GOP is a little off target though. The big issue this year is illegal immigration.

For years Washington has turned a blind eye to the situation because politicians view illegals as potential voters. Republicans want the Hispanic vote to fight the black vote held by the Democrats, and Democrats want to pander to Hispanics so that they can get the unconditional support of every voting minority group in order to crush the GOP.

Congress is finally addressing the issue, though for the wrong reasons. In the debates on Capitol Hill we are hearing a lot about the plight of these “immigrants,” but I must ask our representatives this: what about the plight of the American people? How does illegal immigration impact us?

The answer lies in the billions of dollars in expenses we are burdened with due to this invasion from our southern border. Both healthcare and education show us only a small example of the cost of illegal immigration.

With healthcare we are seeing individual ERs, even entire hospitals being shut down because of bankruptcy induced by illegal aliens. The vast number of illegal aliens is draining hospital profits. Hospitals are businesses – they need to make a profit or they have to shut down. Illegals enter a hospital with emergencies, and they are treated regardless of insurance status. When the aliens are discharged the hospital does not receive compensation for their work, which means they have essentially provided free health care. Ultimately we must bear these costs. Thus if illegals do not deprive Americans of healthcare because of hospital closings, the increased costs contribute to a formidable financial burden - a burden we would not have to carry if Congress would show some political will.

The second area is education. Illegals have flooded our public school systems. We already pay huge taxes for our kids to attend public schools, but with the children of illegal aliens filling desks, classrooms are overflowing and the resources of local schools are being pushed to the breaking point. Illegals need special tutors to learn English, special texts written in Spanish, and they get this special treatment free of charge because their parents do not pay income taxes. Americans pick up their slack. We are already paying exorbitant taxes, but they are only thrust higher because of the extra load.

Enough is enough. Politicians would love nothing more than to make the 11 million illegal aliens here already legal voters. It seems that illegal aliens have more influence on our elected representatives than we do, and that is unacceptable. Americans are being hurt financially, socially, and our safety is threatened due to illegal immigration. We are losing control of our own country, and unless we act soon, the losses will be irreparable. Ó
